Friends, Family, Past Members, Prospective Members walk - Ben Shee (Ochils)
Saturday 11th November 2023
A short social walk in the Ochils for our past members, prospective members and invited friends and family. Ben Shee is a 516m "Donald Dewey" in the eastern Ochils.
After the walk we will head to one of the following for refreshments: Mona's of Muckhart, or the Inn at Muckhart.
This is not a led/guided walk. There is no walk leader. We walk as equals with everyone having responsibility for their own safety and sharing responsibility for the safety of the group as a whole. You should make sure that you are adequately kitted out for the walk (including emergencies however unlikely this may be).
If you are not confident of your route finding abilities you should ensure that you stay with the main group and do get ahead of the group or lag behind. If you choose to rely on other members for route finding you accept the risk that this involves.
Please ensure you have read our participation agreement before joining the walk.
Distance: 5 - 5.5 miles
Ascent: 360m (1200 feet)
Terrain: Unsurfaced, uneven paths - may be muddy/slippy.
Grade: Bronze/Silver - see grading information for explanation
Estimated walking time: 3 to 3.5 hours including a "lunch stop"
Map: OS LR58, EX366 or Harveys Ochils Superwalker
What to bring:
Dogs
Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept under CLOSE CONTROL as defined in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. That is, responding to your recall and kept to heel, or on a short lead of 2m or less. Dogs should not be permitted to be a pest to other walkers. You are responsible for your dog's behaviour at all times and should keep it in your sights.
Under 18's
If you are bringing a younger member of the family with you please be sure that they are able to cope with the walk. Please also make sure that both you and they are well equipped for the walk. You are responsible for their safety and welfare so you should carry additional warm clothing/hats/gloves for them, along with sufficient food/drink and first aid kit. Please bring a survival bag (bivvy bag) if you have one.
Proposed route:
Forest track from Glensherup Woodland Trust car park to Glensherup Dam. Cross dam. Southwest on track/path and then follow path northwest uphill to the coll. Northeast to Ben Shee leaving main track for trodden path to the summit. Descend north to rejoin track and follow it northeast downhill to exit wooded area. Southeast down grassy hillside alongside fence to join Glensherup track/road and walk back to the reservoir. Recross the dam and follow forest track back to car park.
