Walking With Us
Before the walk
During the walk – what to expect
After the walk
- Check the weather forecast (MWIS do good mountain forecasts).
- Familiarise yourself with the proposed route including "escape" options.
- Ensure you are properly equipped for your chosen walk.
- Arrange car share if required - we set up WhatsApp groups to facilitate this.
- Arrive at the meeting point on time (please try not to keep people waiting). SatNav doesn't always work well for rural areas.
During the walk – what to expect
- We walk in small groups (maximum 6 people for a hill walk).
- You are your own “leader” and responsible for your own safety and welfare. However, we all have a collective duty of care towards each other.
- Keep alert to changing weather conditions and what is going on around you.
- Try to ensure you are aware of your location at all times.
- The proposed route may change during the course of the day, flexibility is key.
- If you are at the front of the group ensure you know what the intended route is, if you go the wrong way you may find yourself on your own if other members go a different way.
- If you are at the front of the group, make sure you are aware of what is going on at the back of the group at all times. Do not get so far in front that you are out of contact with the group. Stop and wait for other members to catch up from time to time and give them a few minutes before moving off again.
- If you want to leave the group to do your own thing or walk at your own pace, make sure you tell someone.
After the walk
- Post walk refreshments are the norm.
